Congo Euthanized

Congo, the hero German shepherd dog from Princeton, New Jersey, who defended his owner last year from a trespasser on her own property, and then, through his owner, went on to change the law in New Jersey to make it more difficult for callous officials in municipalities to execute dogs, was euthanized today along with his three companion dogs, Lucia, Hunter and Beat. His owner, Guy James, asked that the dogs be euthanized knowing that the township of Princeton would purposely misinterpret what was truly an unfortunate accident involving Guy's mother-in-law as an attack by Congo and his companions. By asking that Congo, Lucia, Hunter and Bear be euthanized, Guy James has elevated those four magnificent dogs into a realm of heroes where few dogs have gone before. And Guy James himself raised the bar of the bond between man and dog by what he did to save Congo last year, and what he did to all four of his dogs this year to spare them fates that we thought were exterminated from human capabilities. Were it not for the fact that four magnificent dogs had to die because our society has fallen victim to incompetence and callousness on the part of pubic officials everywhere, one would be tempted to say that Congo outsmarted all of them. But his spirt, as well as those of Lucia, Hunter and Bear, will live forever as symbols of what is wrong with our society today.

Congo and his companions got more accomplished for the good of man in their short lives than most people even dream of accomplishing over their entire lives. Congo, Lucia, Hunter and Bear, thank you for your heroism.
